Fine-line tattoos look delicate initially, but they can fade or merge if outlines are placed too close. Here is what to check on your sketch.
The fine-line fade dilemma
Ultra-fine lines (0.15mm - 0.25mm) carry less ink pigment. If the artist injects ink too shallow, it fades within years. If they place lines close together, they expand into a blurred shadow. Safe fine-line design requires clean outlines and strategic line gaps.
- Maintain a minimum 1.5mm gap between parallel thin lines.
- Avoid micro-text inside small floral shapes.
- Ensure your artist is experienced in depth control to prevent blowouts.
Safe linework guidelines
Every style has unique rules. Make sure your reference blueprint stencil matches these baseline limits:
- Spacing: Keep a minimum 1.5mm gap clearance between any adjacent parallel outlines.
- Skin Breaks: Ensure solid fillings have blank skin windows to breathe and retain high contrast.
- Outline weight: Delicate fine-lines must still hold enough pigment depth to prevent fading.
